Transformers & Magnetic Products
At Penbro Kelnick we specialise in the manufacturing of various power electronics. All our products are
manufactured according to high standards and specifications.
Penbro Kelnick - Power Electronics
Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) and Modules:
Penbro produces a very wide range of PCBs for their in-house manufacturing of power supplies and battery chargers etc.
Standard components are used in the production of the PCBs, which ensures a replacement part being available in the future.
A testing facility forms part of the production line. Every PCB is inspected and tested for functionality before being released.
Power Supplies & Rectifiers:
A Power Supply is an electronic device that supplies an electrical load with electrical energy. Power
supplies have a main function, which is to convert one form of electrical energy to another. Power supplies can also
sometimes be referred to as electric power converters. There are many different types and sizes of power supplies and
they can also be used in various devices.
At some remote railway signal and relay rooms there is no 230 volt ac mains supply available. The only source of power
is the 3kV DC from the overhead line. The high voltage connection of this unit is mounted onto the 3kV mast which feeds
the low voltage section installed in the signal room where 24VDC is generated.
Penbro manufactures Rectifiers for various applications such as DC power supplies, battery chargers,
transformers, cathodic protection, plating rectifiers, modular 19″ rack-mount units and mobile power supplies/battery
chargers. All of the rectifiers include constant voltage and current control and optional alarm features.

Battery Chargers:
We manufacture battery chargers according
to customer specifications. These include chargers for lead-acid (vented or sealed) and NiCad batteries with capacities of
a few amp-hours up to a few hundred amp-hours. The output voltages of our battery chargers range from 6VDC to 300VDC.
In addition to these products, Penbro also offers the service of a specialist crew for on- site battery installations and
maintenance.

Modular Power Racks:
Penbro offers a wide range of 19-inch rack rectifier modules and enclosures. A 19-inch system
provides redundancy and is therefore very popular for the supply of power to a critical load i.e. a system
with two or more rectifiers operating in parallel would still provide power to the load in the event of a
failure of one of the rectifiers. The faulty rectifier may be repaired and re-inserted into the rack
without disrupting the supply of power to the load. Each unit includes alarm outputs via a DB9 connector.
Plating Rectifiers:
Penbro manufactures plating rectifiers with output power ratings that range from as little as
100 watt for light duty applications and up to 200 kilowatt for large volume plating.
Plating rectifiers are usually manufactured in accordance to customer specifications. Due to
the hazardous chemical environments in which the rectifiers normally operate, additional
precautions are taken into account when manufacturing the enclosure and control circuitry.
Cathodic Protection:
Penbro Kelnick manufacture rectifiers to protect pipelines from corrosion. A buried pipeline is subjected
to an induced electrical current due to a difference in voltage potential between the soil and pipe. A
pipeline which has no cathodic protection will eventually corrode and undoubtedly require replacement in
the future.
The most common method of implementing cathodic protection is by inducing an electrical current between the
pipeline and a sacrificial anode which is buried in the ground above the pipeline. This creates a dielectric
effect and the buried anode is consumed instead of the pipeline. The replacement of the anode is significantly
less costly than the replacement of a pipeline.
Inverters:
The Penbro PWM industrial inverter is one of the main reasons why we are currently the preferred
South African supplier of power equipment to the railway signals sector.
Our inverters are manufactured according to the specification
requirements of CSE45D, SABS0142 and ISO9001:2008.
